Sustainable Energy Development Office June 2009
Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6
A warm welcome to another e-Newsletter and I note our Winter Solstice (June 21st) with the length of time between sunrise and sunset the shortest of the year, has passed without great ceremony or fanfare.
For those looking to reinvigorate their body and relieve winter blues you could follow the ancient rituals that included lighting large fires, partaking in communal feasting and physical exertion from dancing to “stir the wit, stave off malaise, reset the internal clock and rekindle the human spirit.”
If you prefer less vigorous winter activities, then our June edition Sustainable Energy Matters will appeal. It looks at the initiatives in energy efficient power and assistance to electricity consumers that were outlined in the State Budget. As well there is the announcement of the construction of two 100 megawatt, high efficiency gas turbines at the Kwinana power station.
Nationally, the allocation of $4.5 billion to support the growth of clean energy generation and new technologies to reduce carbon emissions and stimulate economic activity, including $465 to establish an independent innovation investment body – Renewables Australia - featured prominently in the Federal Budget.
Over the Foundation Day long weekend, the SEDO Expo attracted a record number of visitors especially to our Energy Smart pavilion. Like hot cakes, staff gave away almost 8,000 compact fluorescent lamps to encourage the switch from inefficient incandescent globes to the more energy efficient CFLs.
The consumer protection group Choice echoed customer anger at the efforts they had taken to reduce their carbon emissions by purchasing GreenPower which Choice claimed were wasted under the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).
Best wishes for another sustainable read….
