Sustainable Energy Development Office E-newsletter July 2009
Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6
A new financial year has arrived and whether you are managing a large or small business or juggling day-to-day family fiscal matters, then a budget review is an absolute necessity if we are to get through the year successfully.
The SEDO charter is to deliver the W.A. Government’s sustainable energy policy and promote the increased uptake of energy efficiency products, encourage best practice energy management and greater use of renewable energy. These can play a significant part in your budget considerations at home and at work.
Sustainable Energy Matters this month looks at the advanced metering trial underway at Synergy as a means of effecting behavioural change that can result in reduced power consumption and lower expenditure on electricity.
In Britain, smart meters will be installed in all homes by 2020 to enable householders to monitor their own energy use and make the appropriate reductions in their use of energy.
In the United States, exciting new flexible roof top solar panels are set to replace today’s standard rigid solar panels and allow the revolutionary building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) to be incorporated into the architecture of homes and commercial buildings.
Back home, Plantation Energy Australia expects to annually export clean renewable energy in the form of thousands of tonnes of wood pellets made from plantation forest residues at its biomass operation in Albany.
Finally, SEDO is a proud sponsor of the 2009 Master Builders WA Excellence in Construction Awards and presented the Excellence in Efficiency Award to Diploma Construction and Woodhead Architects and ARUP Engineers for the state-of-the-art Durack Centre on Victoria Avenue, Perth.
The criteria for the Award included a building designed with energy efficient feature such as lighting, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning and renewable energy systems.
Best wishes for all your sustainability endeavours this financial year.

The solar power shingle – transforming rooftops into power generators
The appearance of our current rooftop solar panels is destined to change. Researchers in America believe the transparent thin film barrier used to protect flat panel TVs from moisture could become the basis for flexible solar panels that would be installed on roofs like shingles.
