Funding For Cool Schools Program

The Sustainable Energy Development Office Grants Committee recently awarded funding to the City of Joondalup to assist in the implementation of its Cool Schools Program, a pilot initiative aimed at helping to reduce energy consumption in primary schools.  More info...

The Australian Renewable Energy Export Network (AREEN) is conducting a national seminar series for new and experienced exporters of renewable energy technologies in June. Solar Water Pumps Popular In Rural Areas

$2.4 million in rebates have been paid for more than 700 solar pumps and windmills installed in rural areas of Western Australia. Solar pumps have been most popular, accounting for 85% of installations, based on statistics from the Renewable Energy Water Pumping Program to the end of May.  More info...

GreenSmart Development Of The Year

LandCorp's Harvest Lakes residential estate at Atwell has been named 'Development of the Year' at the 2004 Housing Industry Association's GreenSmart Awards. The subdivision is Western Australia's first and Australia's biggest GreenSmart village. GreenSmart is an industry-driven initiative, which seeks to increase sustainable practices within the land development and building industry, encompassing energy, water and waste management; indoor air quality; construction materials; landscaping; and noise abatement.  More info...

Excellent Achievement For Water Corporation Building

The Sustainable Energy Development Office recently presented the Water Corporation with an Australian Building Greenhouse Rating of three and a half stars (Whole of Building) for the John Tonkin Water Centre in Leederville. With current industry best practice represented by three stars, this is an excellent achievement for a structure that was built 25 years ago. It reflects the work done by the Water Corporation in recent years to upgrade facilities in the building and to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.  More info...

Government Agencies Target 6% Energy Reduction

State Government agencies participating in the Energy Smart Government Program will soon be finalising their 2003/04 energy consumption reports with the end of the financial year approaching. Under the program, agencies are required to reduce energy consumption by 6% in 2003/04, with a total reduction target of 12% by 2006/07. In order to meet these targets, many agencies are taking advantage of funding assistance administered by the Sustainable Energy Development Office.  More info...

New Planning Guidelines For Wind Farms

There is currently a strong interest in the development of wind farms in Western Australia, with over 400 MW of electricity generation proposed for the State. Two major wind farms have been announced recently - a 90 MW project near Geraldton and a 80 MW development near Cervantes. The Western Australian Planning Commission recently released a new Planning Bulletin entitled Guidelines for Wind Farm Development to assist in the planning and assessment of proposed wind energy projects in Western Australia.  More info...

The awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding commitment of Western Australians who have shown leadership in their field of endeavour and instigated successful innovative and creative environmental management and conservation actions. They are open to any resident or group of residents in Western Australia; any organisation, institution, school or business operating in Western Australia, including state and local government authorities.  More info...
