Landfill Gas Facility At Gosnells

The Australian Gas Light Company's (AGL) second landfill gas power station in Western Australia was officially opened by the Hon. Eric Ripper, Minister for Energy, on 30 September. The power station is expected to have an annual output of 15,700 megawatt-hours at full capacity, enough electricity to supply around 3,000 households. It is also expected to deliver greenhouse gas savings of around 87,600 tonnes per year.  More info...

National Energy Efficiency Inquiry

Further to the Australian Government's White Paper, 'Securing Australia's Energy Future', the Productivity Commission has been asked to report on the economic and environmental potential offered by energy efficiency improvements in Australia. The public inquiry is now underway with the recent release of an issues paper to assist individuals and organisations prepare submissions to the inquiry.  More info...

Government Savings From Energy Performance Contract

During 2003/04, the Department of Land Information significantly reduced its energy consumption with the assistance of an energy performance contract with Honeywell. The savings were well in excess of its energy savings target of 15% under the Energy Smart Government program. The energy performance contract combines facilities management with guaranteed energy savings and the first contract of its kind for a Western Australian public sector agency. It is anticipated that the contract will serve as a model for other Government agencies aspiring to meet their energy saving targets.  More info...

Western Australian Greenhouse Strategy Released

The Hon Dr Geoff Gallop, Premier of Western Australia, launched the Western Australian Greenhouse Strategy on 14 September. The strategy establishes a way forward to embrace the opportunities and manage the risks associated with climate change by fostering research programs, providing Government leadership and representing Western Australian interests nationally and internationally.  More info...

House Energy Ratings

Since the new energy efficiency measures were incorporated into the Building Code of Australia on 1 July 2003, the Sustainable Energy Development Office has audited over 2000 house energy ratings by accredited assessors in Western Australia. There are currently around 150 assessors accredited in the use of the house energy rating tool, FirstRate. As part of the House Energy Rating program, these assessors are required to submit details of their ratings to the Sustainable Energy Development Office, which then get audited for accuracy and consistency.  More info...

Designing An Energy Smart Home

On 27 October, the City of Wanneroo is hosting a free community seminar on energy efficient house design. The seminar will cover a range of topics to help householders build and live 'Energy Smart'. It will also include a limited number of free QuickRate assessments by FirstRate accredited assessors, made available through the Sustainable Energy Development Office.  More info...

Upcoming Energy Conferences

There are two energy-related conferences coming up in Perth over the next couple of months. The first is the Energy in WA conference, which is hosted by the Australian Institute of Energy and the Office of Energy. The second is the annual Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society conference, titled 'Solar 2004: Life, the Universe and Renewables'.  More info...

Naragebup, the Rockingham Regional Environment Centre, is holding a one-day seminar for businesses and householders titled 'Renewable Energy for Dummies'. The seminar will cover everything from setting up wind and solar energy systems to the latest in Government rebates. It will also include simple ways to reduce your energy use, which is important when setting up a renewable energy system.  More info...

Public Seminars In Bunbury And Albany

The Sustainable Energy Development Office is holding free educational seminars for the community in the towns of Bunbury and Albany next month. These are the last of the public seminars for this year, which have been running in Western Australian regional towns and metropolitan areas since April. The main purpose of the seminars is to provide practical information and advice on ways to save money and energy at home.  More info...
