Perth’s ‘greenest’ suburbs

Your suburb may look green – with leafy trees, parks and gardens - but how environmentally friendly is it? A recent analysis by Synergy reveals just which are Perth’s greenest suburbs.

Energy Minister Francis Logan recently announced that White Gum Valley was Perth’s ‘greenest’ suburb as determined by the number of households purchasing accredited renewable energy from the State’s residential electricity provider, Synergy.

With 5.68 percent of households in White Gum Valley having signed up for GreenPower, the suburb took out line honours, followed by West Leederville with 5.28 percent and Shenton Park with 4.77 percent.

The Minister said signing up for renewable energy was easy and affordable and was an important way for households to help the environment.

“We have seen an increase over the past 18 months in the number of Western Australians signing up for GreenPower and I would like to congratulate those residents of White Gum Valley who are leading the charge,” he said.

Synergy managing director Jim Mitchell said Synergy was in the market seeking new sources of renewable energy.

“Last year, we announced new contracts for the supply of 41MW of accredited renewable energy, and we are in the market once again for further supplies of renewable energy,” Mr Mitchell said.

“By purchasing NaturalPower or EasyGreen, customers are encouraging investment in renewable energy in WA above that required by the national target scheme and reducing our reliance on traditional fuel sources for power generation.”

Mr Logan made the announcement regarding Perth’s greenest suburbs whilst in Butler to mark the occasion of the first residents moving into The Green Estate, a sustainable urban development by the Satterley Property Group.

Satterley has decided to provide each household in the estate with a $30 Synergy EasyGreen contribution for each power bill for three years. This should ensure that Butler eventually becomes Perth’s greenest suburb, with 1,500 residents expected to move into The Green. Once all houses are built and occupied, it will mean about 41 per cent of all the households in Butler will be using energy from renewable sources.

The top 20 suburbs with the highest percentage of households that have green power are listed below. This was calculated from the number of customers purchasing accredited renewable energy as a proportion of households in each suburb/town. They exclude suburbs with fewer than 500 households.
